Baby Beckett // Birth Story

"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." – Theodore Roosevelt

My favorite conversation to have with people about our business is talking about birth photography.  The conversation often goes two ways, I either get, “that’s awesome I know someone who had a birth photographer” or “what!? Birth photography?! Like you’re there when they are having a baby and you take pictures??”….  I actually prefer to get the second reaction because it gives me an open door to talk about my “passion project”.

Birth photography to me is an opportunity to catch life at its rawest and most beautiful state.  My goal is to capture the journey into parenthood as it actually happens, birth is beautiful, exciting, sometimes a little scary, but every stage of the birth process has its purpose and impact.  The moments I have been blessed to share with parents and babies is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to do this work.

This week I was able to be with Joe and Johanna as they welcomed a little boy into the world.  I was there for the birth of their daughter Olivia as well, and these two have the biggest hearts and the kindest souls.  There were a couple of moments during the birth of their perfect little boy that were nerve-wracking and, in those moments, I processed, “do I put the camera down, do I stop shooting?”  I kept shooting, I took a step back to give room and continued to document their story.

Parenthood is the greatest gift, but the greatest gifts do not come free of difficulty and strain.  For some, the journey into pregnancy is the struggle, or maybe pregnancy and/or delivery, or possibly postpartum, none-the-less each person is blessed with their own story full of challenges.  The hard parts make the sweet parts even sweeter, and I truly believe those moments prepare our hearts and souls for what parenthood is, the sweetest blessing and the greatest challenge.

So as you look through the photos of this beautiful family, you will see every emotion, a room full of nurses, and a beautiful baby, each moment is precious, each moment makes their story complete.  I love this family with every bit of me and they are a true blessing.
